Iran Team Exits Amid Trump Threat; Tech-Driven Talks Persist On

Amid crucial discussions in Switzerland between Iran and the United States, a moment of tension arose when Iran’s delegation momentarily exited the venue. This occurred following a stern warning from US President Donald Trump regarding Iran’s support for Hezbollah. The warning has cast doubt over the future of the negotiations, which aim to reduce regional tensions.

The Iranian delegation’s brief departure followed a meeting with Qatari mediators, and it was reportedly a reaction to Trump’s threats of military action should Iran fail to curb Hezbollah’s activities. Despite this dramatic moment, a diplomat close to the negotiations clarified that Iran had not pulled out of the talks and remained committed to the dialogue process.

Responding to the US President’s comments, Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, issued a strong statement asserting that Iran’s armed forces were ready to respond to any threats. The talks, which have started with discussions on the implementation of the newly signed US-Iran memorandum of understanding and the situation in Lebanon, have not yet addressed Tehran’s nuclear program, according to Iranian officials.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance described the ongoing negotiations as a “historic meeting,” expressing optimism for a long-term improvement in regional relations. The discussions come in the context of heightened tensions related to Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has maintained that any significant progress towards a final agreement is contingent upon the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. Despite existing disagreements, both parties continue their efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement within the next 60 days.
