This summer’s intense heatwaves across Europe have resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with experts cautioning that the actual number is likely much higher as additional countries finalize their assessments. Germany, France, and Spain have reported a combined total exceeding 25,000 excess deaths, underscoring the severe impact of the extreme temperatures. Germany alone has documented around 14,000 heat-related deaths from April through early August, marking its deadliest summer for heat since records began. In Spain, nearly 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat since May, setting a new record for the country.
France has preliminarily reported approximately 7,300 excess deaths between late May and July, although this figure is expected to rise as data for August is included. Other European nations, such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also noted significant increases in mortality rates during these periods of extreme heat. The heatwaves have driven temperatures above 40°C in many areas across western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records.
Scientists have linked the increasing frequency and intensity of these extreme heat events to climate change, which poses growing public health risks. Identifying heat-related deaths presents challenges, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being directly recorded as the cause of death.
Experts anticipate that the total number of heat-related deaths across Europe will rise as more delayed mortality data is collected and analyzed, particularly as August figures become available. This year’s heatwaves serve as a stark reminder of the escalating threat posed by severe heat events and the urgent need for effective public health strategies to mitigate their impact.
