Meta’s AI Investments Surge, Leading to 91% Drop in Free Cash Flow

Meta Platforms has reported a dramatic decrease in free cash flow for the second quarter, marking a 91% decline compared to the same period last year. The company registered $784 million in free cash flow for the quarter ending June 30, a steep fall from the $8.55 billion reported a year ago. This significant downturn has impacted Meta’s share price, which saw a decline in after-hours trading. Despite these figures, CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed confidence in the company’s strategy, emphasizing its substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. These investments are directed towards enhancing computing capabilities to train AI models, expanding the core business, developing personal AI assistants, and creating AI solutions for enterprise customers.

While Meta’s earnings per share were $6.18, falling short of analysts’ expectations of $7.22, the company still achieved a 28% increase in quarterly revenue, reaching $60.8 billion. This growth was largely fueled by the robust performance of its advertising business. Looking ahead, Meta projects capital expenditure between $130 billion and $145 billion by 2026, raising the lower end of its previous estimates. This increased spending is aimed at further expanding AI infrastructure and boosting data center capacity.

The financial challenges come amid ongoing legal issues, with Meta facing lawsuits related to youth safety on its social media platforms. These legal expenses, along with restructuring costs, have negatively impacted the company’s operating income for the quarter. Despite these hurdles, Meta continues to witness growth in user engagement, with daily active users across its applications rising to 3.6 billion.

Zuckerberg has maintained that the significant upfront costs associated with AI investments are justified, as the company aims to establish AI as a major long-term business. Meta’s aggressive push in the AI sector underscores its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in technology and innovation, despite the immediate financial strain.
