From Geran to Shahed: Why Ukraine’s Drone Experience Is Uniquely Relevant to West Asia

Understanding why Ukraine’s drone defense offer was so valuable requires understanding the technological connection between the conflict in Eastern Europe and the one now unfolding in West Asia. The same Iranian drone design — the Shahed — has been used against Ukraine by Russia (under the name Geran) and is now being used against American forces by Iran directly. Ukraine has more experience defeating this specific weapon than any other country on earth.

Russia began acquiring Iranian Shahed drones early in its war against Ukraine and eventually began producing its own versions domestically. The scale of their deployment — hundreds per month during peak periods — forced Ukraine to develop specialized counter-drone capabilities that no other military has been required to build under similar operational pressure. These capabilities are now the most tested anti-Shahed systems in existence.

When Zelensky brought this expertise to the White House in August, he was offering something uniquely valuable: not theoretical capability, but battle-tested solutions to the exact weapons now being used against American troops. The August briefing made this connection explicit, warning that Iran was improving the same Shahed design that Ukraine had been fighting.

The Trump administration’s failure to act on this offer is now understood as a critical mistake. Seven American deaths later, the connection between Ukraine’s experience and America’s need has become undeniable. Conventional defenses have been expensive and imperfect against a threat that Ukraine’s systems were specifically built to address.

Ukraine’s deployment to Jordan and Gulf states brings the world’s most experienced anti-Shahed force to the region that needs it most. Specialists are operating interceptor systems that have been refined through thousands of real engagements. The deployment should have happened in August. It is happening now.
