City’s Attacking Prowess Blunted by Resolute Brighton

by admin477351

Manchester City’s usually potent attack was blunted by a resolute Brighton & Hove Albion side on Wednesday in a 1-1 draw that extends the champions’ winless streak to three Premier League matches. City now trail Arsenal by five points in the title race.

City opened the scoring four minutes before halftime when Erling Haaland converted a penalty awarded after Diego Gomez fouled Jeremy Doku in the box. VAR confirmed the decision, and Haaland made no mistake from the spot. The goal was his 150th for Manchester City, ended a three-match scoring drought, and took him to 20 Premier League goals for the season.

The second half began with City seeking to extend their advantage. Bernardo Silva had an excellent opportunity when he capitalized on a Brighton error, but his shot struck the post. The match became increasingly contentious when a confrontation erupted between City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper, with both players receiving yellow cards.

Brighton equalized in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who produced a moment of brilliance. The Japanese international received a pass from the flank, positioned himself expertly at the edge of the penalty area, and guided a low shot into the far corner with precision.

The visitors seized the initiative after equalizing, controlling possession and building attacks methodically. They came agonizingly close to completing the comeback when Mitoma’s creative play found Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s shot was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s follow-up attempt from near the byline struck the woodwork. City had one final chance to claim victory when Haaland found himself one-on-one with Verbruggen in stoppage time, but the Brighton goalkeeper’s excellent save ensured the spoils were shared.
