In a concerted effort to enhance regional cooperation and advance the European Union membership prospects of the Western Balkans, leaders gathered for a summit in Tivat, Montenegro. This meeting comes six months after their last assembly in Brussels and was centered on the theme of “Shared Prosperity and Stability of the EU and the Western Balkans.” The discussions were pivotal, focusing on crucial issues like EU enlargement, economic integration, and security cooperation, all against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical challenges.
The EU leadership reiterated their steadfast support for the Western Balkans’ aspirations to join the EU and evaluated the progress made in integrating these countries into the EU’s economic framework. A significant highlight of the summit was the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which was introduced in 2023. This plan promises up to €6 billion in funding to facilitate reforms, stimulate investments, and promote more robust participation in the EU’s single market.
Furthermore, the summit delved into discussions on enhancing cooperation across foreign policy, defense, and cybersecurity. Given the current global landscape, particular emphasis was placed on bolstering resilience against cyber threats, disinformation campaigns, and other forms of foreign interference that could destabilize the region.
The EU’s role as the largest trading partner, investor, and donor in the Western Balkans was underscored, reinforcing its influence and commitment to the region. The leaders stressed the necessity for ongoing reforms and regional cooperation, viewing these as critical steps for the countries as they edge closer to potential EU membership.
