After serving seven years as Russia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin has been recalled by Moscow, signaling further strain in UK-Russian relations amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Russian embassy confirmed that Kelin’s diplomatic assignment ended on July 21, and a successor has yet to be appointed. In the interim, Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, assumes the role of the senior Russian diplomat in the UK.
This diplomatic shift occurs as tensions between the two nations escalate, primarily due to the UK’s military assistance to Ukraine. Recent reports suggesting that British-manufactured attack drones have been supplied to Ukraine for operations against Russian targets have prompted Moscow to issue a stark warning of potential repercussions for London.
The Kremlin has criticized the UK for what it perceives as a confrontational stance, opposing its support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, the British government stands firm in its commitment to Ukraine, endorsing its right to self-defense against Russia’s incursion.
