Ukraine has executed one of its most significant drone assaults on Russian territory since the conflict began, as reported by Russian officials. This offensive resulted in the deaths of at least six individuals and ignited a substantial fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry announced that they intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones over a 24-hour timeframe, marking this as the highest number intercepted in a single day. These numbers, however, have not been independently corroborated.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow area, with 201 drones successfully intercepted. One casualty was reported in the region. A significant blaze erupted at a Wildberries distribution center located near Podolsk, roughly 25 miles south of Moscow’s center. Ukraine’s military noted that the warehouse, which spans about 250,000 square meters, suffered severe damage and was rendered inoperative. Ukrainian authorities have increasingly utilized long-range drones to attack Russian military and economic sites distant from the front lines. They allege that multiple Wildberries facilities have been hit due to their supposed use in military logistics.
The recent events underscore Ukraine’s advancing long-range strike capabilities, whereas Russia persists in using drones and missiles to bombard Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Concurrently, Russian attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals in Ukraine. This includes casualties from Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. In Kyiv, a missile strike injured six people and sparked fires, notably at a large book market where several businesses reportedly lost all their stock.
In a related development, NATO officials reported that a Spanish fighter jet, participating in a NATO patrol, downed a suspected Russian drone after it intruded into Romanian airspace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of a continuous pattern of targeting civilian structures, claiming that Moscow launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the previous week.
The escalation in the conflict coincides with both nations expanding their deployment of long-range weaponry, raising the potential for increased casualties and destruction far from the immediate front lines.
