Polish authorities have successfully thwarted an alleged plot, backed by Russia, to assassinate a Ukrainian-American citizen residing in Warsaw, as announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Describing the incident as unprecedented, Tusk highlighted that this was the first known attempt by a Russia-linked actor to target a US citizen within the borders of another NATO member state. The intended target has been identified by Polish officials as a US citizen of Ukrainian descent, who was reportedly perceived as a threat by the Russian government.
A suspect, allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence services, was apprehended in Poland on August 7 and is currently held in custody for a period of three months. This operation was conducted in collaboration with US intelligence agencies, according to the minister in charge of overseeing Poland’s intelligence activities. The incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing concerns across Europe regarding alleged Russian operations aimed at political adversaries, Ukrainian supporters, and others deemed hostile to Moscow.
European authorities have previously disrupted suspected plots of assassination, sabotage, and arson, which are allegedly connected to Russian intelligence networks. In light of this, Tusk cautioned that Russia might attempt to target individuals it finds inconvenient in various countries, emphasizing the need for Poland and its allies to remain vigilant and prepared to thwart such operations.
While the Russian government has not yet responded to these allegations, the US State Department acknowledged awareness of the reports but offered no additional information. This latest development contributes to a series of incidents across Europe that Western officials have attributed to alleged Russian intelligence activities since the onset of the war in Ukraine.
