In a recent gathering of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian members of the FIDESZ–KDNP delegation expressed dissatisfaction with the European Commission’s silence on constitutional and political shifts in Hungary. The delegation, comprising MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László, urged the Commission to take a stand on several critical issues, including constitutional amendments and changes impacting the independence of state institutions.

The Hungarian lawmakers highlighted the European Commission’s previous concerns regarding the rule of law in Hungary, which had led to the suspension of EU funds to the country. Despite those actions, they noted the Commission’s lack of response to recent developments that allegedly threaten democratic norms. The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation questioned whether these constitutional changes align with European democratic standards, underscoring the need for clarity from the Commission.

Central to their argument was the assertion that democratic principles must be uniformly applied across all member states of the European Union. This, they believe, necessitates a clear and consistent response from the European Commission to ensure that political and constitutional changes in Hungary do not undermine democratic institutions.

During the committee meeting, the Hungarian delegation sought detailed answers from Commission representatives regarding the implications of these developments. However, they reported that the Commission did not provide specific responses to the issues raised, leaving the concerns of the Hungarian MEPs unaddressed.
