In a significant move to bolster infrastructure and energy cooperation, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has revealed that the European Union is set to contribute up to €200 million in grants to Azerbaijan. This financial injection is aimed at advancing transport, energy, and digital infrastructure projects within the country, potentially unlocking an impressive €2 billion in combined public and private investment. The announcement was made during von der Leyen’s meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, where discussions centered on enhancing energy partnerships, regional connectivity, and advancing the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
During her visit, von der Leyen also proposed the establishment of a new connectivity partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan, highlighting the importance of strengthening ties in various sectors. President Aliyev acknowledged the positive impact of the 2022 energy agreement with the EU, noting a substantial increase of approximately 65% in Azerbaijani gas exports to member states. Currently, 10 EU countries benefit from importing gas from Azerbaijan, indicating the depth of their growing energy collaboration.
Further emphasizing the EU’s commitment to regional development, von der Leyen announced a €20 million support program dedicated to border communities. This program aims to enhance healthcare services, facilitate mine clearance, promote rural development, and offer assistance to small businesses, underscoring the EU’s holistic approach to regional stability and prosperity.
Von der Leyen’s visit to Azerbaijan is part of a broader diplomatic tour in the South Caucasus, with plans to continue discussions in Armenia. The initiatives and agreements discussed during her visit reflect the EU’s strategic interest in strengthening its relationships in the region, particularly in the context of energy security and infrastructure development.
