India has been recognized as one of the European Union’s most crucial strategic partners, with both entities enhancing collaboration across trade, technology, security, and connectivity sectors. This partnership is progressing towards the signing of a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end, which signifies a major development in their bilateral relations.

During the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly emphasized the depth of the EU’s partnership with India. Beyond trade, this relationship encompasses technology, research, climate initiatives, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. Kelly highlighted the strengthening ties between India and the EU as a means to tackle common global challenges and foster sustainable economic growth.

The India-EU Free Trade Agreement has reached the negotiation completion stage and is anticipated to be officially signed by December, potentially coming into effect early next year. This agreement is seen as a pivotal step in expanding cooperation in pivotal areas such as defense, security, and emerging technologies, especially in light of evolving global economic and geopolitical dynamics.

EU Ambassador Herve Delphin elaborated on how Europe and India are navigating the shifting global landscape by seeking increased strategic autonomy while maintaining robust alliances. He underscored the critical need to safeguard freedom of navigation and ensure secure global trade routes. Delphin called for enhanced India-EU collaboration in maritime security and regional stability, reflecting the shared interests of both regions in these areas.
